The slot is a great option for wideouts who are quick, since they can get open more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list that benefits from more slot time is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.
Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the low end of the list. They're better on short and intermediate routes rather than deep zones. Jeudy is a good option to be a sleeper for this season, as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved on more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to perform well on intermediate and short-to middle routes, since that's what he excelled at in 2021 when he played for the Bills. Hamler could be a great replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.
Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The percentage of snaps that receivers take in the slot can be a good indicator of their ability to run routes that are deep. It is not always an accurate reflection of a receiver's abilities because certain receivers are better in the slot and can't play further.
For instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery is the leader in the league in the number of targets per game (4.8) but is sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets are from outside and it's hard to get a first down when playing a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.
Certain receivers are better playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. For instance, the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he completed 74 percent of his slot routes as opposed to just 26% for boundary routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.
Furthermore it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines inside on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-1 coverage.
Speed receivers are typically more effective when lining up inside, because they can get targeted way down the field and frequently find themselves with one-on-one coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

Wide receivers who have an excellent slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers than other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.
It's therefore fascinating to see a receiver such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. He's running more routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup benefits for your team and clarify why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.
Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays on the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as fast as some of the other players in this ranking however he's still an elite wide receiver who is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman is yet another example of a player who's capable of posting big numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a high slot receiving grade and is one of the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also a great opponent for contested catch.
Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He's been positioned in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important part of his team's defensive line. On the other hand, he's had trouble to block passes from the outside and has allowed a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is the result of playing with unsafe linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed. He also has a great ability to run routes.
